The silver screen return of Doc Savage

The return of the Man of Bronze to the silver screen may be on the horizon.

Yeah, yeah, I know you’ve heard that before. In fact, many times in the past 10 years (or longer). But you can hear it directly from the horse’s mouth in this G4 video clip of the producer of the Batman movie franchise from Attack of the Show, which was broadcasting from Comic-Con in San Diego.

About 3 minutes 15 seconds into the video (below), producer Michael Uslan, talking with host Kevin Pereira, makes it about as official as it has been since the 1970s:

“This is an exclusive. We just kinda got the all the i’s dotted and the t’s crossed. We’re going to bring, really, the world’s first super hero to the screen: Doc Savage,” Uslan says.

Note: The video is no longer available online.

Though prompted, Uslan wouldn’t discuss who might play him. (Let the speculation begin!)

There’s been quite a bit of discussion about the possible movie on the Flea Run group at Yahoo, beginning after reports got out from Comic-Con on Thursday night.

Uslan has been linked to a potential movie featuring The Shadow, but there was no mention of that movie in the clip or any of the other Comic-Con coverage. Nor has there been mention of director Sam Raimi, whose name also been associated with both projects.

  • Eagle eyes there, Courtney. I had to rewatch the clip to notice!

By this being announced at Comic-Con, let’s hope it will actually move forward now, and not end up in the development equivalent of the Sargasso Sea.

  • Thanks for including the clip, Billy. This was amazing. You gotta like the Quantum of Solace banner in the background.

  • Particularly with Doc Savage, it seems like pulp movie rumors have come around every year or so since the late ’80s.

Of course, Doc wasn’t the only pulp-related movie news at Comic-Con. I didn’t mention Robert Rodriguez’s plans for Red Sonja, starring Rose McGowan. And, Rodriguez is also apparently working on a Conan project. (I guess Rodriguez and Robert E. Howard being Texans, you know.)

And last year’s Comic-Con broke the news about Solomon Kane, a movie based on Howard’s Puritan avenger. It’s been filmed but has no release date.

  • Oh, how I want to be excited. I’m so sick of hearing pulp movie “news” that turns out to be aural-smoke.

    Time will tell…
