Doc Con XIII programming comes together

The Doc Con XIII schedule is coming together nicely. The con is just under three months away.

This year’s con will be held Saturday, Nov. 13, at Jay Ryan’s house in Peoria, Ariz. While Jay is hosting the con, I’ve taken over the role of this year’s program coordinator. That’s a change from previous years, where the host did double-duty and really didn’t get to enjoy the con.

We’re celebrating the 70th anniversary of Doc Savage in comics and the 75th anniversary of the first appearance of Chemistry the ape in the novels.

Cost for the con will be $20 again this year, which includes a copy of The Big Book of Bronze, Volume 3.

On the bill this year will be:

  • A discussion about Arizona State University students’ essays on Doc Savage/Prof. Challenger (from “Lost World”), by Paul Cook
  • Doc’s vest vs. Batman’s utility belt (as well as their other gadgets), by Steve Ringgenberg
  • A presentation by Howard Wright, publisher of Bronze Gazette
  • A look at “Monk Mayfair as Doc Savage’s Id,” by Fred Forino
  • Something puzzling from the Doc Con quiz master, Glenn Horner
  • Something having to do with the Doc Savage Method of Self Development, by Jay
  • The forgotten Doc Savage TV script, by me
  • A video retrospective of Doc Savage comic books, with contributions by Howard, Jay, Courtney Rogers and me
  • Doc Con After Dark (our Saturday evening activity) will feature the screening of a video on the pulp era.

We’d welcome additional presentations, if anyone is so moved. Of course, if you would like to just be a participant, rather than a presenter, we’d be happy for you to attend.

While the “official” con day is Saturday, Nov. 13, we kick the weekend off on Friday night, Nov. 12, with a radio play re-enactment. Then Sunday morning, Nov. 14, will be a breakfast for those wishing to get together one last time.

Hope to see you there!
