‘The Pulpster’ and PulpFest 2014

The Pulpster logoThis year’s issue of The Pulpster just went off to the printers.

It’s jam-packed with great articles by Mike Chomko, Don Hutchison, Don Herron, Jeff Shanks, Garyn Roberts, Chris Vallini Lawson, Dwayne Olson, John Gunnison and Tony Davis. Most spin off of PulpFest 2014‘s two themes: the 75th anniversary of the science-fiction pulp boom of 1939, and the 80th anniversary of the 1934 debut of the shudder pulps.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get in all of the articles submitted this year. Contributions by Monte Herridge, Tom Johnson, Larry Latham, and Garyn Roberts (he submitted two different essays) were put on hold after we ran out of space.

I certainly appreciate the effort from both sets of contributors, and hope to see in print next year the articles we had to hold.

Peter Chomko gets a round of applause from me for the editing and proofing he has done the past few years. His efforts insure we have a nice clean publication.

Special thanks goes to Mike Chomko, who — this year and last year — wrote the cover story and, as publisher, coordinated advertising for The Pulpster. He does all of this in addition to being part of the team that organizes PulpFest. The last thing he needed was some naggy editor asking him to trim his article by 15 percent at the last minute.

Putting the wraps on The Pulpster signals that PulpFest is just around the corner.

It runs Aug. 7-10 in Columbus, Ohio. The schedule of events has everything a pulp fan could want. Highlights include:

  • Laurie Powers‘ lecture on her grandfather, fictioneer Paul Powers, at Ohio State University.
  • Presentations on Famous Fantastic Mysteries, Startling Stories, Astounding, Unknown, “1939: Science Fiction’s Boom Year,” and the shudder pulps.
  • A celebration of the 75th anniversary of the debut of Street & Smith‘s The Avenger.
  • A look at pulp artist John Newton Howitt.
  • A New Pulp panel.
  • Readings by new fictioneers.
  • Nightly showings of the Buck Rogers movie serial.
  • The massive pulp dealers’ room, of course.
  • And, a lot of other pulp fans.

PulpFest is under a month away, but there’s still time to make plans to attend. Check out the PulpFest website for complete details.

Hope to see you there!
