A pulp pulpit 10 years on

How Yellowed Perils appeared in the early years.

A pulp magazine blog? Well, yeah.

That’s the way the first post at Yellowed Perils started. That was 10 years ago today at this very moment.

My primary motivation for starting Yellowed Perils was my attendance at the upcoming Pulpcon 35. I wanted to post live from the con, something no one else was doing at the time. (Remember, Twitter was only four months old then, and Instagram was still four years away.)

Even before that, I saw a need for news, commentary, and discussion about the pulps at ThePulp.Net, in addition to the pages of pulp links, bibliography, sources, and history.

For a number of years, The Pulp Companion provided a way to add the news and commentary elements. (I’d envisioned The Pulp Companion as an online pulp fanzine, and had a number of contributors.) During the same time, ThePulp.Net also hosted a forum for discussions of the pulps.

But both of those are ended. The Pulp Companion still exists in a static form at TPN, while the forum software became antiquated and the Pulp.Forum was eliminated.

The live blogging from Pulpcon was a success. And while I didn’t attend another major pulp convention for eight years, Yellowed Perils continued on. I returned to live blogging with PulpFest 2014, continued in 2015, and plan to do so again in a few weeks at PulpFest 2016.

(On a side note: I posted two hours of audio from programming at Pulpcon 35 in 2006. Last year for PulpFest 2015, I posted over 10 hours of programming audio. I hope to continue that this year. If you want to listen to it, check out the convention coverage pages at TPN.)

Yellowed Perils has welcomed two other blogs to ThePulp.Net family in the past 10 years. Michael R. Brown started blogging as The Pulp Super-Fan in March 2013, then John Olsen joined us with That’s Pulp! in October 2015. A fourth blog is in the works, so stay tuned for an announcement.

Not only is 2016 the 10th anniversary of Yellowed Peril’s beginning, as I mentioned late last year 2016 is also the 20th anniversary of ThePulp.Net. I wrote that have a few features I want to roll out to celebrate 20 years, and I still do.

So as we begin the second decade of Yellowed Perils — and the next 20 years of ThePulp.Net (I hope) — I want to thank you for your support and comments along the way. And I want to encourage you to continue commenting here, on Yellowed Perils, as well as on the other blogs at TPN. And, if you’d prefer more direct communication, drop me an email using the contact TPN form.
