New Pulp Pulps Review

A look at ‘Tales of Masks & Mayhem’

Tales of Masks & Mayhem“Tales of Masks and Mayhem,” originally published by Mystic Toad Press, is back in a new edition by Altus Press. This collection reprints stories from Fading Shadow’s Double Danger Tales zine, which focused on New Pulp heroes or new stories of classic pulp heroes in the public domain.

I wish they had indicated what issues these stories had appeared. Since they didn’t, here is the info.

“Monarch of the Flame Madness” by Maxentius Andor Scarlatti appeared in Double Danger Tales No. 14 and 15. It stars The Tarantula, a character in the style of The Spider.

“Crimson Harvest” by Therese Drippe and Tom Johnson appared in Double Danger Tales No. 31. It stars The Black Bat, a classic pulp hero.

“The Grey Monk’s Justice” by John L. French appeared in DDT #44. It stars The Grey Monk, a character in style with The Shadow. Unlike most new hero pulps, this one is set in modern times. There was a collection of all The Gray Monk stories from Wild Cat Books, but it may be out of print.

“Lunar League” by Lance Curry appeared in Double Danger Tales No. 41. It had the classic pulp hero Secret Agent X going after another classic pulp hero, The Moon Man. The Moon Man was a Robin Hood-like character, stealing from the corrupt to give to the poor, and as such, was chased by the police.

“Doc Atlas: Gorilla Killer” by Michael Black appeared in Double Danger Tales No. 16. It stars Black’s Doc Savage pastiche, Doc Atlas. You can also get his Doc Atlas novel, “Melody of Vengence” and I’ve done a posting on Doc Atlas.

“Hunter’s Moon” by Debra Delorme and Tom Johnson appeared in Double Danger Tales No. 20. It pits Debra’s The Scarecrow against Johnson’s The Black Ghost. These are New Pulp characters set in modern times.

“The Night Hawk” by Will Murray appeared in Double Danger Tales No. 50. It stars Murray’s Night Hawk, which is a Western-style character.

There are three more collections in this series, two from Mystic Toad Press, and another from NTD Books. Check them out.  I’ll be doing reviews of them soon.

  • John L. French here. In reference to the Grey Monk, the Wildcat Books edition of Souls on Fire is still available and a new edition from Padwolf Publishing entitled The Grey Monk: Souls on Fire is forthcoming.
