Fanzine update: “Bronze Gazette” #68-70

A while back I posted on The Bronze Gazette, a “must have” fanzine for fans of Doc Savage put out by Howard Wright.

As noted, it’s published about three times a year and subscriptions are for three specific issues, the most recent trio being issues 68, 69 and 70. So we will focus on those three issues here. Info on how to subscribe can be found at the Pulp Coming Attractions website.

Bronze Gazette (October 2013)#68 (October 2013) has a Halloween theme, with a nice cover by Bob Larkin. A big chunk of the issue is devoted to a bio of Larkin. For me, he was the best modern Doc cover artists after James Bama. We also get a review of the recent new Doc novel by Will Murray: “Skull Island.” An added bonus are scenes from “Skull Island” by artist Ron Wilber. We also get updated on upcoming books, comics and the planned Doc movie.

#69 (December 2013) came out surprising fast after the prior issue. The big focus is on the new Doc Savage series from Dynamite, and has an interview with Chris Roberson, the writer of the new series, along with the planned covers and some interior artwork. The rest of the volume is taken up by a report on the latest Doc Con, XVI.

#70 (March 2014) recently came out. The bulk of the issue is taken up by an article that reassesses the timeline for Doc, proposing that the adventures actually started earlier than most people think. Kind of an interesting perspective that is backed up by items in the stories. We also get a reprint of a Doc Savage comic book story from the Street & Smith Shadow Comics (which is where Doc landed after the cancellation of his own comic). This story was set after the “mystic ruby” period ended. It has been awhile since one of these ran. Like almost all the Doc comics, only Ham and Monk (here shown as a bald bruiser with a unibrow) help out Doc. In several stories there was also a secretary for Doc, missing here.

Subscriptions are being taken for issues #71-73. I’ve re-upped again, and recommend others do the same.
