Pulp comics: ‘Twilight Avenger Returns’

'The Twilight Avenger Returns'He’s back! The Twilight Avenger, an original comic-book hero from the late ’80s black & white craze is back in The Twilight Avenger Returns.

Clearly based on pulp and movie serials and set in the 1930s, he is now being reprinted by Pulp 2.0 Press. The first volume reprinted the first set of issues from Elite Comics. The second volume reprints the first four issues from Eternity Comics, a black & white imprint of Malibu Comics.

Created by John Wooley and Terry Tidwell, The Twilight Avenger is really ex-college football star Reece Chambers.

When his fiancee is injured and put into a coma by gangsters, he teams up with his future father-in-law to fight back. Dr. Herth outfits Reece with a variety of items, including a gas gun that shoots both gas and gas grenades, a blinding chest light, and more. He wears a cloak, hat, and a mask with goggles that includes a gas mask.

They are joined by reporter Joan Casey, who knows their secret, but keeps it quite to get stories she can publish. She seems a potential love interest, which starts in these stories, though we also see Reece visit his comatose fiance.

Unlike the first volume, each of the four issues in The Twilight Avenger Returns have standalone stories. We have a possible zombie outbreak. Then giant vampire bats. A hypnotist goes bad. The final story is a sad story of love and revenge.

Like the first volume we get extras, including an article on The Twilight Avenger movie serial that never was.

There are four more issues from Eternity, so I’m hoping we’ll see a third volume in the near future.
